“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” - Romans 5: 3 - 5
Life is a series of unpredictable events and experiences. Some are joyous, filling our hearts with warmth and happiness. Others, however, test our resilience and strength, pushing us to our limits. In these moments of adversity, we face a critical decision: how do we respond?
I can choose to let it define me, confine me, or refine me.
When faced with hardship, it's easy to let it define us. We can allow a single event or a series of unfortunate circumstances to shape our identity. Choosing to be determined by negative experiences can lead to a cycle of self-doubt and low self-esteem. However, we can also choose to be defined by our resilience and ability to rise above challenges. Instead of letting failure define us, we can let our determination and perseverance become the hallmarks of our identity.
Adversity can also confine us, trapping us in a state of fear, anxiety, or bitterness. When we let challenges confine us, we limit our potential and close ourselves off to new opportunities. To avoid the trap of confinement, we must recognize that our setbacks do not determine our future.
The most empowering choice we can make is to let our experiences refine us. Refinement involves self-reflection, resilience, and a commitment to personal development. It means asking ourselves what we can learn from each challenge and how we can use that knowledge to become better, stronger individuals. This process can be painful and demanding, but the rewards are profound. By letting experiences refine us, we emerge with greater wisdom, strength, and compassion.
While we cannot control every event, we can control our response. Will you let the moment define, confine, or refine you?
“See, I have refined you but not like silver; I have tested you in the furnace of adversity.” - Isaiah 48:10

Weekly Prayer
Lord, grant us the strength to choose wisely when confronted with hardships. Help us not to let these experiences define us in ways that diminish our true potential or confine us in fear and doubt. Instead, empower us to embrace the refining process, trusting that we will emerge stronger, wiser, and closer to You through it. Amen.

Leadership: In Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin
Book Review: "Leadership in Turbulent Times" is a testament to the enduring qualities of effective leadership and the profound impact that solid and principled leaders can have on society. Goodwin's work is a tribute to these four presidents and a guide for future leaders navigating their own turbulent times. This book offers valuable perspectives and inspiration for anyone interested in leadership dynamics. I highly recommend it.

Each summer, we provide groceries for the children in the Baker Glover community. During the school year, the children receive free lunches at school. The children do not have access to this program during the summer, so Gainesville First United Methodist Church stands in the gap. We have volunteers lined up for the program but still need some funding. It cost about $10,000.00 to fund the program. If you want to assist, please go to gfumc.com/give and put “Summer Lunch Program” in the memo.
