In Mark chapter nine in the Bible, a desperate father wanting to see his son healed comes to Jesus and says, “If you can do anything, help us! Have compassion on us.”
Jesus speaks directly to the father and says, “If you are able! All things can be done for the one who believes.” And in desperation, the father says, “I believe; help my unbelief!” I have faith and no faith. I trust, and I don’t trust.
The father’s encounter with Jesus reminds us that our doubts are different from unbelief. They are part of our seeking. Being honest about our doubts is a way of staying authentic in our faith.
If you are struggling with doubt, take a lesson from the father who brought his son to Jesus for healing. First, If you are honest with your doubts, Jesus will be faithful to show you who he is. Jesus prefers honest doubt over pretend faith. Secondly, act on your faith, not your doubts. Doubt doesn’t weaken God’s belief in you.
