I love the Fourth of July and everything about it: picnics, parades, baseball, and fireworks. It is one of those rare days that entire communities, though regularly divided over things like politics, race, and social-economic status, will join together to celebrate that we are “one nation under God.”
In a season of patriotic celebrations, how do we show love and respect to our nation? One pastor said, “Don’t say ‘My country, right or wrong.’ That’s like saying ‘My grandmother, drunk or sober’; it doesn’t get you anywhere. Don’t just salute the flag and don’t burn it either. Wash it. Make it clean.”
We have a responsibility to love our country with our eyes wide open: to be critical where liberty and justice are not being lived out; and to celebrate where we see opportunities for all being given.
Have a safe and wonderful Fourth of July!
