Mid-Week Advent Inspiration
I heard a story about a seven-year-old boy who had been playing outside. His mother called him in for dinner.
“Wait, Tommy,” said his mom, “you have germs on your hands. Gotta wash up before we eat.” So Tommy scrambled down, ran and washed his hands, came back, climbed in his chair, grabbed his fork, and started to eat.
But again, his mother stopped him: “Wait, Tommy. We must say the blessing before we eat. First, we want to thank God for our food.”
Tommy put down his fork, shook his head, and muttered, “Germs and God, germs, and God, that’s all I ever hear around here, and I haven’t seen either one of them.”
Friends, we have heard a lot about germs in the past eighteen months.
As we reflect on the season of Christmas, let’s be reminded that Jesus’ birth does give God a face. Jesus says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”
Jesus has come to tell us the truth about God and the truth about ourselves. And this is the good news of Christmas.
My baby brother came home from the hospital in a Christmas stocking. He was born on December 22, 1981.
There was an ice storm in Gainesville, Georgia. We stayed at my great-uncle’s house on Virginia Circle. He was closer to Northeast Georgia Medical Center than our house in Clermont, Georgia.
The night my mom went into labor, my middle brother fell off the bed.
I was five years old and vaguely remember. But I do recall it being an odd gift from Santa Claus.
Happy birthday, brother!
