In July, I gave a homeless man named Jeff a ride across town. As I stopped where he wanted to get out, Jeff asked if he could pray with me. “Of course,” I responded, and he prayed a fairly long and very eloquent prayer. At one point, Jeff said something that struck me, and I have found myself reflecting on it in the months since I heard those words. Jeff prayed, “Lord, we often ask you for the big things in life when maybe it is not the right season in our life for those things. Lord, let us remember all of the things you provide us with daily that we take for granted and let us be thankful for those things.”
Too often, I find myself caught up in and focused on things like work, success, and future plans. I go to God for help with the “big things” in life and become impatient when things I want to happen or expect to happen haven’t happened. That’s why what Jeff prayed had such a tremendous impact on me, not to mention, here was a man with hardly anything talking about thanking God for all of the things He provides us daily.
Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19. Knowing “God shall supply all your need” is something to be incredibly thankful for and should instill in us the patience to allow Him to work out the “big things” in our lives, according to His plan. Let’s not forget the everyday blessings God supplies. Oh, how much we have to be thankful for!
